WHAT IS BDSLT?

Bidirectional Static Load Testing is a method of internally loading a pile from within — delivering more information, faster, at lower total cost than any conventional approach.

The YJACK Cell Assembly

A hydraulic jack assembly (YJACK cell) is installed within the pile's reinforcement cage before concreting. The cell sits at a calculated depth — typically near the pile toe or at the boundary between friction zones. Telltale rods and strain gauges are installed at this stage. Once concrete is poured and cured, the cell is completely encased within the pile.

Bidirectional Loading

Hydraulic pressure is applied from the surface through flexible hoses. As pressure builds, the cell expands simultaneously upward against shaft friction above the cell, and downward against end bearing and lower shaft friction below. The soil and rock system provides all reaction — no external apparatus required at the surface.

Instrumentation & Measurement

Displacement transducers measure pile movement at the surface. Telltale rods measure movement at cell level. Vibrating wire strain gauges embedded along the pile record load distribution at multiple depths. All data is captured in real-time by a digital data acquisition system and processed into load-movement curves and unit resistance values.

Post-Test & Pile Reuse

After the test, the void created by the expanded cell is pressure-grouted, restoring structural continuity of the pile. The pile is then certified for full service load — contributing to the permanent foundation. Telltale rods and surface instrumentation are recovered and reused on the next project. Nothing is wasted.

Can the tested pile really be used as a working pile afterwards?+
Yes. After the test, the void created by the YJACK cell is pressure-grouted, restoring full structural continuity. The pile then carries its design working load as part of the permanent foundation. This is one of BDSLT's most significant advantages — you pay for testing and receive a working pile in return.
Is BDSLT accepted by NHAI, BRO, Railways, and other Indian government bodies?+
BDSLT is standardised under ASTM D8169 and has been performed on thousands of projects globally across 60+ countries. IS 2911 Part 4 and IRC 78 govern pile testing in India. BDSLT is accepted as an equivalent method on many Indian infrastructure projects. Specific acceptance must be confirmed with the supervising PMC or engineer during the design stage — our team can assist in making the technical case.
When must the YJACK cell be installed — what if I decide too late?+
The cell assembly must be installed in the reinforcement cage before concreting — it cannot be retrofitted to an existing pile. The decision must be made before the pile is cast. We recommend engaging us during design or pre-construction so cell placement can be optimised from the soil investigation report.
How many YJACK cells are needed per test?+
This depends on the required test load and pile geometry. A single cell is sufficient for many standard tests. For very high test loads, multiple cells can be stacked at the same level to multiply capacity. Our engineer determines the optimal configuration during quotation based on your soil report and test load.
How does BDSLT cost compare to conventional static load testing?+
BDSLT may appear to have a higher testing fee than a basic static load test. But the correct comparison includes the full cost of the conventional method: dedicated test pile, kentledge or reaction pile installation, removal, and time. When all costs are included, BDSLT is consistently more cost-effective — particularly as test loads increase.
Do you operate pan-India?+
Yes. Piletech India operates across all Indian states including remote locations, hill states, and difficult terrain. Our equipment is fully mobilisable and our team travels to project sites anywhere in the country. Mobilisation cost is factored into the project quote based on location.
What information is needed to provide a quote?+
